The Facilities Master Plan in Action: Mark Twain Elementary addition/improvements

Twain-ElementaryThis one is pretty close to my heart. My daughter has attended Mark Twain for the past 6 years. This year is the first time she–or any other student in the school’s history–will be able to enjoy the first months of school in the comfort of an air conditioned building. No more flushed faces at the end of a long, hot day. No more struggling to teach or learn for nearly a third of the year.

I’m proud that our district put together a plan that is providing for the schools with the greatest need first as well as building new schools where they’re most needed. It hasn’t always worked that way in the past.

The Facilities master Plan is ambitious and wide ranging. It’s going to touch every school in our district. It’s going to provide us with beautiful new facilities and renew the old. When I saw the smiles of the faces of parents, students, staff and teachers at Twain’s Ice Cream Social last Thursday night, I knew we were on the right track.

Let’s take a minute to enjoy the moment. As we see this grand older school and a lovely newer on open, both on the Southeast side of Iowa City, as we see Penn Elementary in North Liberty receive its much-needed addition, and other great improvement project under way, let’s smile and know each of our schools will receive this treatment.

Let’s celebrate and support the Facilities Master Plan. But let’s not waver. There’s still a lot of work left to do and it’s going to take all our efforts to make it happen.
